The Catherine Washburn Medical Association was formed in 1971 in memory of Catherine Washburn, a Lopez resident who was known for her generous community support. CWMA began by raising funds for the original clinic building, which was completed in 1974. In 2009 a few Lopez trail enthusiasts got together to explore the possibility of expanding hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities on the island.
